American Shorthair

The American Shorthair breed is the artistic representation of the first cats that were brought to North America by early settlers. Frequently described as a "working cat," their decades of work has now escalated their status to management. All kidding aside, the American Shorthair should exhibit traits that would enable it to survive in the elements, such as a hard coat, a broad muzzle that is long enough to firmly grasp pray, and a stocky body with no exaggerated features so that it wouldn't get tangled in the brush.

 

American Shorthairs are easygoing, moderate energy cats which are wonderful for families, as well as the tendancy to get along well with dogs with proper introduction. They love to play with toys, especially those that bring out their hunting abilities. They are a generally quiet breed, often making chirps and trills instead of actual meows. They can be taught to stay off of counters and use the scratching posts, but they are also quite capable of seeking out the treat drawer!

 

This is a breed that does not require much grooming, but like all cats, they shed their undercoat out in spring. Daily combing with a grooming mitt will keep their coats in pristine condition year round. Bathing helps remove excess oils and further reduces shedding.

 

At NuDawnz and Treves catteries, we raise American Shorthairs primarily in brown tabbies, but occasionally have silvers, blue tabbies, and patched tabbies available. We are working on reds and hope to have some in late 2025. Our kittens range in price from $1800-3000, and retired adults from $500-1500.
